4 Healthy and Easy Paleo Desserts
Trying to eat Paleo but dealing with a sweet tooth? We've got you covered. With a little creativity, you can whip up Paleo desserts that are as healthy as they are easy.
“With some of Paleo's restrictions, it can be a challenging diet,” says dietitian Jonathan Valdez, MBA, RDN. “However, Paleo desserts can be a way to satisfy sweet cravings. It’s okay to have some sweet, as long as you're not going overboard.”
An easy go-to for satisfying your sweet tooth the Paleo way: with dark chocolate. (Yes, it's on the 'okay' list.) Here, we round up four healthy Paleo desserts that taste sinful but are 100 percent Spartan-approved, so you can treat yourself without sacrificing your health goals. And, yes, they all feature dark chocolate.
Paleo Desserts
1. Sweet Strawberry Chop
Ingredients
- 8 strawberries
- ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 Tbsp coconut flakes
- 1 Tbsp honey
Directions
- Wash, dry, and chop the strawberries.
- In a small saucepan, melt the chocolate.
- Drizzle the dark chocolate over the chopped strawberries, and top with the coconut flakes and honey.
A single serving of strawberries (eight berries) contains more vitamin C than an orange. Strawberries also provide folate, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, and magnesium.
2. Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
Ingredients
- 3 cups strawberries, washed and dried
- 15 oz dark chocolate
- 1 tsp unsweetened dark cocoa powder
Directions
- Heat the chocolate in a small saucepan on low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes until all the chocolate has melted.
- Dip the strawberries in dark chocolate until covered, then lay on a flat tray.
- Sprinkle the cocoa powder over the chocolate-covered strawberries and freeze until the chocolate has hardened.
Dark chocolate that isn’t alkalized is heart-healthy, and may lower blood pressure and offer other health benefits.
3. Chocolate Almond Butter Bars
Ingredients
- 1 cup almond butter
- ¼ cup maple syrup or honey
- ½ cup coconut flour
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- ½ cup coconut oil
- strawberries, cut into heart shapes (sliced in half)
- 3 Tbsp coconut flakes
Directions
- In a bowl, mix together the almond butter, maple syrup or honey, and coconut flour. Mold the mixture into bar-like shapes and arrange these on a tray.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil, then pour over the almond bar crust.
- Top each bar with the heart-shaped strawberries and coconut flakes.
A serving of almonds (or almond butter) contains about 6 grams of protein, 12 vitamins and minerals, 13 grams of healthy fats, 3 1/2 grams of fiber, and are low in sugar.
4. Amazing Avocado Mousse
Ingredients
- ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 ripe avocado
- ½ cup coconut milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup or honey
Directions
- Melt the chocolate in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Put all of the ingredients, including the melted chocolate, in a food processor or blender, and process until smooth.
- Serve in a small dish, garnished with extra chocolate chips.
