5 Creative (And Healthy!) Rainbow-Inspired Treats to Celebrate Pride Month
June is LGBTQ Pride Month, which celebrates, commemorates and honors the June 28th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City. In this historic turning point, patrons of a gay bar (called the Stonewall Inn) fought against a police raid. As law enforcement officers aggressively hauled customers out of the bar and onto the streets, their actions sparked retaliation from community members in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan that lasted six days. This incident was crucial to catalyzing decades of civil-rights fights in the pursuit of equal love for all, to move us to where we are today.
In 2015, same-sex marriage was (finally, FINALLY!!) legalized by the Supreme Court on June 26, and in 2016, former President Obama made a Presidential Proclamation officially declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning Month. He also declared the Stonewall Inn the country's first monument to the gay rights struggle. But why the rainbow? In 1978, San Fransisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow LGBTQ flag as representation of love for all, and commitment to the fierce fight for equal rights. The image stuck.
Today, especially with curfews, quarantine and little to do at home but cook and workout, it only makes sense that you should celebrate Pride Month with some of the best DIY technicolored treats and meals out there. Here are our favorite rainbow-colored recipes to honor Pride Month. Put on your party pants and let's do this. Love for all, AROO!
