3 Ways to Build Iron Willpower and Self-Control

Presented by Spartan Training®

Self-control, discipline, and willpower are all extremely important characteristics to possess, not only in social situations, but also when it comes to staying committed to your own goals and aspirations. But is self-control something you're born with, or can you develop it over time?

On this episode of the Spartan Up! podcast, Spartan CEO and founder Joe De Sena consults professor and world-renowned psychologist Roy Baumeister, who has found through his life's research that self-control and willpower are all about starting small habits that will set you up for success, and then being relentlessly consistent about them.

"Self-control works like a muscle," Baumeister says. "So, if you exercise it, it gradually gets stronger. It's sort of one basic muscle that you use for everything."

How to Build Self-Control, Discipline, and Willpower

1. Do something hard every day.

This will exercise and strengthen your self-control muscle.

2. Keep track of your progress.

Reward yourself for meeting your goals.

3. Make your goals public.

Telling everyone about your goals adds social pressure and an element of accountability. Who wants to quit when they have a million eyes on them, just waiting for them to fail?
