Give Fear the Finger | Spartan Mind #13
Overcoming Fear
Overcoming fear is a big deal. Fear of trying something new, fear of failing, fear of rejection, fear of the unknown. Fear is one of those emotions that can significantly impact our choices, behaviors and ways that we engage with the world. Fear is what can keep us from starting a new project, seeking out a better job, and taking on a challenge like a Spartan Race. When it comes to overcoming fear, we all have our own set of fears. The intensity to which we feel fear about different things varies as well.
One trap that we can all fall into though is the misbelief that the intensity of our fear is a measure of our capacity to handle the challenge that is ahead of us. When we connect fear with ability we are more at risk of becoming immobilized and opting out of what it is that we are afraid of instead of moving onward.
We often have this misbelief that the more intensly we feel fear the less capacity we have to take on a challenge.
This is not always the case. We might be afraid of the challenge due to irrational reasons. When it comes to being in this situation, asking yourself a few questions may help you break down the fear, shift away from it and go at the goal.
Overcoming Fear Lessons
- The intensity that we feel fear is no measure of our capacity to handle the challenge ahead.
- We can be very afraid of something and incredibly capable of conquering the challenge at the same time.
- We must deconstruct the belief that the intensity of our fear is somehow associated with our abilities.
