Spartan FIT Coach Q&A: Lexie Wohlfort Will Empower You to Be Your Fittest Self
Presented by Spartan Training®

In this Spartan Fit franchise, we sit down with our Spartan FIT Coaches to get their best fitness advice and discover what makes them tick. Next up: Lexie Wohlfort—she'll teach you to prepare for the unexpected

Today, 28-year-old Lexie Wohlfort is a true fitness pro. The Brooklyn-based Spartan FIT Master Coach is a certified personal trainer, group fitness instructor, CrossFit Level 2 Coach, and Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach. But a mere three years ago, her life looked drastically different. In fact, it was in January 2018 that she picked up a barbell for the first time. “I felt like I could conquer the world and I wanted others to feel that same way,” she says. So, she started training hard, becoming stronger, learning new skills, and feeling more empowered every day.

As a musical theatre major that struggled with an eating disorder in college, she didn’t anticipate her life would take the turns that it has. “It really goes to show that you can do whatever you set your mind to,” she says.

Q&A with Fitness Coach Lexie Wohlfort

On Training, Performance & Fitness Philosophy

SPARTAN RACE: What’s your training philosophy?

LEXIE WOHLFORT: When it comes to training, I help my clients find their inner athlete by mastering a little bit of everything. I don't just want people to look good, I want them to feel stronger, have better endurance, and learn fun new skills along the way. [My philosophy] is definitely unique in the way that I don't focus on "weight loss" or "aesthetics." I focus on making you into the best and fittest version of yourself, the aesthetics just happen to come with the territory.

SR: What about when it comes to nutrition?

LW: I don't follow any particular diet. I believe that your nutrition should seamlessly fit in with your life and it should never detract from it. I enjoy the foods I want to enjoy when I want to enjoy them. I do cook most of my meals at home with fresh, whole ingredients, but I never deprive myself from a dessert or a night of takeout. I'm a strong believer in the 80/20 rule and having balance. I've been in a place where nutritional obsessions have taken over my mental health and I refuse to go back to that place. I teach my clients to do the same by slowly turning their nutrition needle towards making better and better choices each week.

SR: What inspires you?

LW: My reason for training and becoming a coach stems from my desire to help others realize they can become fitter, stronger, and better no matter what age, background, or perceived setback. Hearing stories of people that take that kind of creed to heart inspires me greatly.

SR: If there was one thing you could change about the fitness industry, what would it be?

LW: The thought that you need to look a certain way or "have abs" to be seen as a fit person has always bothered me. Sure, looks are nice, but having abs doesn't make you healthy. I want to flip the script to being the best version of you that you can be.

On The Mental Game & Recovery

Fitness Coach Lexie Wohlfort

SR: How do you work on your mental fitness?

LW: I work on my mental game all the time. I really think that mindset is what sets apart the average person from the true competitor. I recently started going to therapy, which I highly recommend for everyone, to start breaking through a lot of limiting beliefs I have about not only my fitness and nutrition, but myself as well. My coach also works heavily on mindset with me, always encouraging me to find one bright spot in my training even if I feel like the day didn't go as planned. There's always something to be proud of, even if it's just getting through half of your workout.

SR: What does a recovery day look like for you?

LW: I let my rest days be complete and total rest days. I don't go into the gym at all. I can usually be found on my couch watching an anime or I'll be riding my bike into Manhattan to run some fun errands I don't get to do during the week. They usually involve making a lot of food for the week, too! I like to have my meals ready to go for when I start my training again the next few days.

SR: What does being Spartan FIT mean to you?

LW: Being Spartan FIT means being ready for anything. You want your workout to make you feel better in the real world. You want your workout to prepare you for the unknown and unknowable and that's exactly what Spartan FIT does.
