Endurance Unleashed: Ryan Gore on Why He Chooses Suffering
Presented by Spartan Training®

Some people fear the pain. Some people avoid the struggle. Ryan Gore? He leans in. Again. And again. And again.

He’s not a professional athlete. He’s not superhuman. He’s a guy who made a choice – to stop making excuses, to break the cycle, and to push until there was nothing left.

And he’s still pushing.

How and Why Spartan Death Racer Ryan Gore Chooses to Suffer

From Couch Crumbs to the Ultra Grind

Ryan wasn’t always built for endurance. At one point, he was just a guy eating Oreos on his couch, watching his potential slip away. His weight shot up. His energy plummeted. He could have stayed there. Most people would.

But that’s not what Spartans do.

He signed up for a gym membership the next day. He started running. The progress was slow, but Ryan refused to quit. Over the course of a year, he went from 230 pounds to 165. The determined runner clawed his way back to fitness. But that wasn’t enough. He needed more.

The One Race That Changed Everything

Ryan Gore found Spartan racing in 2016. His first Spartan Super destroyed him. Recovery was slow, and most would have thrown in the towel. Instead of backing down, he doubled down. More races. Harder races. The deeper Ryan went, the more he found out about himself.

And his numbers, as of 2025, don’t lie:

🔥 9x Spartan Sprints

🔥 12x Spartan Supers

🔥 5x Spartan Beasts

🔥 5x Spartan Ultras (including the Iceland World Championship)

🔥 4x 4-hour Hurricane Heats

🔥 5x 12 hour Hurricane Heats

🔥 3x 24-hour Hurricane Heats

🔥 1x H3X Hurricane Heat

🔥 1x Agoge (Namibia, Africa)

🔥 7x Spartan Death Races (Winter and Summer Versions): With 6 DNF'S and 1 finish to his name… Ryan’s not done yet.

Why This True Spartan Keeps Showing up

The suffering never gets easier. The body still breaks down. The mind still whispers, “Quit.”

But Ryan doesn’t listen.

“Going to Pittsfield for the Death Race is like a family reunion," he says. "It’s a reset button. It’s just me and the mountain."

The Winter Death Race? Even harder than the summer iteration. The cold cuts through everything. The silence forces you to face yourself. And that’s why Ryan, not unlike his fellow Death Race competitors, keeps coming back for more.

Spartan CEO Joe De Sena on Ryan Gore: "This is how you evolve..."

“Ryan is the definition of what happens when you stop making excuses and start facing the hard way. He didn’t wait for motivation—he took action. He put in the work, embraced the suffering, and found a new version of himself through Spartan Extreme Endurance events. If you want to go beyond your limits, don’t overthink it. Reach out to him. Learn how to get started. Then commit.”
— Joe De Sena, Spartan Founder and CEO

The Meaning of Commitment: No Excuses. No Quitting.

“Commitment means never quitting," Ryan says. "Even if you fail, you get back up and keep moving forward."

That’s the Spartan way. That’s why Ryan keeps throwing himself into the fire. That’s why you should, too.
